Engineer
I feel like this is something that's been a big part of my life for the past 4 years, yet I haven't shared much about. I really don't know why though, like it is something I'm proud of? I guess it was all so new I just had to live through it before I could talk about it.
About 4 years ago I moved to Arizona and studied sound engineering at a trade school called The Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences. I went to this school after dropping out of college in 2018 and was looking for something new. The school has a 9-month long program with a 2-month long internship at the end (which sounded great to me- even if I hated it I would be done in under a year). The internship is completed in a city of your choosing and truthfully this is what enticed me the most. I knew I always wanted to move to LA and was interested in entertainment, so this seemed like the perfect opportunity to maybe make it happen.
After finishing the class portion of the school (and pouring everything I had into learning something new), I moved to California (with 5 months of quarantining in Ohio happening in-between). Because of the time I moved, it was very chaotic and finishing my internship took 8 months instead of 2. But honestly that can be expected as we all know everything got put on a hold during 2020 :’).
After some time I settled into La (kinda)(sorda) and was working at a restaurant, a music studio, and editing some videos/podcasts on the side. Soon enough, a friend let me know they were hiring at a post production house he worked at. I applied, interviewed, and got hired. This post house was really cool because we worked on movie trailers. I was lucky enough to work on titles such as Spider-man: No Way Home, Journal for Jordan, Uncharted, Morbius, Escape Room, Venom, Ghostbusters Afterlife, American Underdog, and more. It was a great experience and I learned soooo much!
Over time though, I was beginning to realize that engineering might not be for me. I was working on really cool projects but the work itself wasn't necessarily exciting me. I felt this anxious feeling inside me that I still needed to see what else was out there.
So, I left my job as an assistant engineer in 2022. (This was the job I quit right before going on my trip to Lake Isabella - see my last blog post.) I didn't have any plans for what was next but I knew it was time to move on.
Like I said, I am so so soooo grateful for my time at CRAS, my time at the post house, and my time in all those music studios. It was a great way to build a foundation out here in California, which I very much needed. Now I am working at Nuyorican Productions and excited to see what's next in store. For now, I'll leave you with all the fun memories that Arizona, engineering, and 2020 gave me. Here's to never stop chasing what your heart burns for :)
